Born Charles Rogers Grooms in Nashville, Tennessee, Red Grooms was a Pop artist who wore many hats. Grooms studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and in 1957 took a summer course at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts. Soon after, he opened a gallery where he exhibited the now famous Pop artists, Claes Oldenburg and Jim Dine. In addition to being a gallery owner, Grooms was also a filmmaker, sculptor, installation artist and printmaker. In all of these mediums, Grooms often to exhibited the bustling life of Chicago and New York City. Grooms’ work has been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Grooms still resides in New York City in TriBeCa where he has lived for 40 years.
